{"id":43,"date":"2014-02-27T04:10:31","date_gmt":"2014-02-27T04:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digclub.org\/?page_id=43"},"modified":"2021-06-12T16:13:44","modified_gmt":"2021-06-12T16:13:44","slug":"committees","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/digclub.org\/?page_id=43","title":{"rendered":"Committees"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">WE ACHIEVE OUR PURPOSE THROUGH COMMITTEES:<\/h2>\n<h3>Beautification<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>With Tampa Parks Department (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampagov.net\/dept_parks_and_recreation\/index.asp\">info<\/a>), we plant trees and flowers in Davis Islands&#8217; public areas<\/li>\n<li>We celebrate and enhance nature&#8217;s beauty by\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 30px; list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Maintaining Apex Park (a small, highly visible park near Islands&#8217; entrance)<\/li>\n<li>Decorating for Christmas with decorations on light poles and other areas<\/li>\n<li>Working within a landscape design, we keep our club house and grounds beautiful with an emphasis on native and water saving plants and plants that attract birds and butterflies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Community Development and Service<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Encourage member participation in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neighborhoodlink.com\/tampa\/dica\">Davis Islands Civic Association<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davisislands.net\/\">Davis Islands Chamber of Commerce<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Encourage members to be active in their neighborhood&#8217;s watch program<\/li>\n<li>Contribute floral arrangements, food and gifts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tgh.org\/sections\/02_info\/02_kids\/05-mcdonald_house.htm\">Tampa&#8217;s Ronald McDonald House<\/a>, to Hudson Manor Nursing Home on Davis Islands and other worthy projects<\/li>\n<li>Emphasize ecology&#8217;s importance to our junior gardeners<\/li>\n<li>Grow plants on our grounds to attract and preserve butterflies<\/li>\n<li>Promote awareness of the need to protect birds, butterflies, and endangered tree and wildlife species<\/li>\n<li>Promote awareness of energy and water conservation in gardening<\/li>\n<li>Encourage member training to become:\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 30px; list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Floral show judges in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ffgc.org\/\">Florida Federation of Garden Clubs<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Gardening and environmental consultants<\/li>\n<li>Landscape critics (in a good way, of course)<\/li>\n<li>Plan and conduct classes in floral design to prepare for flower shows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Environmental<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Stress to club members and their families the importance of:\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 30px; list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Environmental involvement<\/li>\n<li>Recycling whenever possible<\/li>\n<li>Controlling litter on streets and in public places<\/li>\n<li>Controlling air and water pollution, including water pollution from excess fertilizer runoff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Garden Therapy<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Brighten senior citizens&#8217; lives at Hudson Manor with monthly garden<br \/>\ntherapy visits<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs&#8217; Garden Therapy Penal Program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Horticulture<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn, enhance and demonstrate horticultural skills in the club&#8217;s monthly meetings<\/li>\n<li>Exchange plants to introduce new plants to gardens &#8211; and to gardeners<\/li>\n<li>Distribute seedlings to increase tree population<\/li>\n<li>Plant and nurture memorial trees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Programs<\/h3>\n<p>Create and present inspiring and educational programs on design and horticulture<\/p>\n<h3>Junior Gardeners<\/h3>\n<p>Through the Junior Gardeners committee, we work to introduce and involve young people in the joys of gardening. We hold meetings on horticulture, flower arranging and conservation. When possible, we develop small landscaping projects for Junior Gardeners to show their skills.<\/p>\n<p>DIGC also Sponsors two campers and contributes funds for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ffgc.org\/youth\/index.html\">Wekiva Youth Camp<\/a> each year and sponsors a teenager&#8217;s attendance at the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ffgc.org\/youth\/index.html\">S.E.E.K.
